Sovereign Hill ……..

I thoroughly enjoyed looking around Sovereign Hill last week. It is just out of Ballarat in Victoria.

I loved the gold miners huts Soverine Hill 001 (Medium)

and the simplicity of what they had for beds and would you believe there was also a hut with bunk beds in it? Loved it and I bet the kids would love it too…..for a weekend away.

Now that is what you call a very basic quilt….

I loved it how the people who worked there were dressed in that era.

There were some really lovely little shops and I just loved browsing in them. I really do love ‘old’ stuff and if I could have brought it all home with me I would have.

This one was full of lollies (Candy for my American friends)

Lots of delightful things to tempt you in this one…

Even Rickets Blue cubes…..I wonder who knows what they are for ……I know because both my Grandmother and Mother used them every Monday before the new products came out.

I will show you more in the next post I do……

If you get the chance to go there then do…its fabulous!

Hugs to All…..

  3. Looks like a great place to visit. Could spend ages poking around all the treasures. I remember Mum using Ricketts blue.

  4. What a super place!! And all the memories they bring to the fore. I used Reckitts blue, but they were in little bags; great for bee stings as well!
Vicki, one thing has me curious ... in the wicker basket just to the right of the pegs?

  5. I loved Soveriegn Hill when we went there - years ago!
I rememeber Ricketts Blue - my Mum used it too - and I have a photo where my brother and I went to a "Dress Up" thing - and I think we must have been on holidays - with limited resources - she covered my brother in ricketts blue and he had a sign that had the name of a song on it - can't rememebr the song now - I imagine he would find that rather embarassing these days!
Thanks Vicki for the prompt to the memories.

  7. lived in Victoria all my life and never been to Sovereign Hill (my kids all have with school!)..one day!

oh my...that quilt on the bed...I have one just like it. It belonged to my Grandmother....it's still in pretty good condition, except it got used as a paint drop sheet at one stage in it's life...until we realised how old it was...made from suit samples my Gran bartered the travelling salesman for.

  8. Thanks so much for the lovely memories of Sovereign Hill. My husband and I took the kids there a few years back and we all loved it. There's something for everyone there. The boys especially loved panning for gold!!! I loved the school, the habby shop, the lolly shop and having a go at making candles.. Such a wonderful place. Glad you enjoyed it too xx

  10. I haven't been to Sovereign hill for about 20 years. I think that "quilt" could be a Wagga, Vicki.Probably more around that era and area. Were those blue cubes the same as the old blue bags? Used in the wash and to put on bee stings?

  12. That looks like a lot of fun!! What is Ricketts blue for? Washing? Thanks for sharing all of the pics. My grandmother had a couple of old quilts that looked like that one.

  13. Although the product my mother used was a little different, it's used for laundry, especially the whites.

  14. Thanks for sharing such lovely pics, Vicki. I would love to visit there one day. We used to have an " Old Sydney Town" down on the Central Coast but it closed many years ago. They all dressed up in costumes as well.
I remember the blue bags, too, along with the double cement tubs, hand wringer, wooden scrubbing board..... there was even a boiler on bricks in the back yard and a long stick for lifting the washing out. OMG I'm showing my age now aren't I? hehe.

  15. Growing up in England my grandmother used 'Dolly Blue' which I'm sure is the same thing, for the white wash.

  16. I still use Reckitt's blue. Now it is in a bottle. Hubby and boys get their white shirts done every couple of months.
